Goldenrod: The Unsung Hero

Say hello to Goldenrod. Goldenrod is the common name for species in the Solidago genus. This genus contains over 100 species, all holding similar properties.

With an affinity for both the upper respiratory system and the urinary system, we can lean into her when faced with a multiplicity of ailments. The flowers and leaves (aerial parts of the plant) are known to have anticatarrhal, anti-inflammatory, astringent, carminative, diuretic, antiseptic, diaphoretic, and vulnerary properties.

With these actions in mind, goldenrod has proven particularly helpful in cases of allergies, helping the body to manage the mucus and drippage often associated with allergic reactions (seasonal allergies and cat allergies, in particular). Solidago has been known to accelerate the recovery of UTIs by assisting the kidneys in flushing out bacteria from the urinary tract. The action of thinning the mucus and fluids in the body, while simultaneously toning the tissue gives goldenrod its powerful healing properties.

Energetically, she can teach us to balance knowing what to let go of and what to hold on to; how valuable that skill is. Goldenrod is a sign of prosperity. It is said that if goldenrod is growing on your property, that you are in good fortune. With the excitement that comes with prosperity, we can look at to her to remind ourselves that humility is of utmost importance. Blooming where our seeds are cast, offering our medicine to all who take the time to get to know us, being unattached to misplaced blame, and remaining whole within our innate beauty are all teachings we can absorb from this magnificent plant.

Following the guidelines of the Honorable Harvest, we encourage you to build a relationship with Goldenrod. Get to know her through touch, smell, sensation, sight, and taste. How do you feel in her presence?
